Experimenting with ZSpheres
ZSphere Spooder

I decided to make a spider using ZSpheres during the Week 3 lab using the reference image below. I didn’t do anything particularly complex as I just moved and scaled various ZSpheres.

Interesting Looking Spooder

When I used adaptive skin on the ZSphere spider, the results weren’t exactly what I expected. The legs looked more like french fries than actual spider legs and there were some unexpected deformities on the rest of the spider.

Moodboard

This mood board is aimed at showing some of my main influences and interests within game design as my project is going to be a new game project. My main interests within game design are coding, level design and quest design. My influences within game design are mainly survival horror and RPG games. I included both examples of the main games that influence me as well as the companies that developed and designed these games.

3D Asset Design Assignment Post 19 – Additional Notes (Tankard)
Viking Wooden Tankard

Medieval Wooden Beer Mug – Classic Beer Mug Image, 2020

For the tankard reference images, I decided to get two different designs for a tankard so I could pull inspiration from both for my model. I went with a similar visual style to the left reference image as the rougher look matches better with my theme.

Final Tankard
Final Tankard Wireframe

For the tankard model, I started with a cylinder which I modified using the scale tool to make it more in line with the desired shape I wanted. I then used the multi-cut tool to add edges that allowed me to add detail to the tankard by using the scale tool. I used the extrude tool to make the handle shape and then used the merge to center function to connect the bottom part of the handle back to the tankard. I used the smooth feature to make the tankard look more realistic.

Final Tankard Textured

Substance Painter was used to texture this model with the smart material Wood Ship Hull Nordic.

3D Asset Design Assignment Post 18 – Additional Notes (Bed)
Medieval Beds Set
Medieval Beds Set Low-Poly 3D Model Image, 2019
Medieval Bed Image, 2017

Both of these reference images show simplistic bed models that I am taking inspiration from for my model. I am going for a simplistic style for the bed because it is intended to be inside a tent so it can’t be too complex because it wouldn’t make sense.

Final Bed
Final Bed Wireframe

I started with a cube for the bed model that I scaled and used the bevel tool on to create the mattress. I added another cube to act as the support for the mattress that I used to scale tool on to make it bigger then longer and wider than the mattress cube. To make the bottom part of the bed, I used multiple cubes that were modified using the scale tool, move tool and rotation tool. The top part of the bed was made using the same tools as well as the duplicate feature. I made the first cube for the top of the bed and then duplicated it multiple times. I made changes to the duplicates so that each part of the top part of the bed was differentiated.

Final Bed Textured

Substance Painter was once again used to texture this model. The mattress of the bed has the smart material Fabric Flannel Tartan applied to it while the wood parts of the bed have a smart material called Wood Ship Hull Old attached to them.

3D Asset Design Assignment Post 17 – Additional Notes (Axe and Tree Stump)

Axe

Medieval Woodsman Axe

Medieval Huntsman Axe
Medieval Huntsman Axe Image, N/D

These two reference images show some very simple axe designs. I chose simple designs because the axe is intended to be used for cutting wood so having a complex design is unnecessary. I will base the axe blade on the left reference image and will take inspiration from both handles.

Final Axe
Final Axe Wireframe

To begin the axe model I created a cylinder which I then scaled to make it thinner to better match what an axe handle would look like. To create the back part of the handle, I extruded from the faces on the top half and the bottom half of the back part of the cylinder separately and moved them in different directions. The merge to center feature was used to put these separate extruded parts back together. To add the curve in the handle, I used the multi-cut tool to add new edges along the cylinder and moved them. I then used the bevel tool which create the curve effect on the model. I used the multi-cut tool to create edges near the top of the axe shaft so that I could extrude the faces between the new edges to create the part of the axe blade that connects to the shaft. Then I used a combination of the extrude tool, the multi-cut tool and the bevel tool to make the actual blade itself.

Final Axe Textured

The axe was textured using Substance Painter. The wood part of the axe has the Wood Walnut smart material applied to it while the blade part of the axe has the smart material Steel Stained on it.

Tree Stump

These two reference images show two different styles of tree stump that I could have done. For my model I took inspiration from both as I thought aspects of both could work well for my design.

Final Tree Stump
Final Tree Stump Wireframe

The tree stump was created using a cylinder that was modified using the scale tool. I used the move tool and the rotation tool to make various changes to the cylinder to modify the position and rotation of vertices and edges at different points of the cylinder. This is so I could add some details to the cylinder to make it look more like a tree stump.

Final Tree Stump Textured

The tree stump was also textured in Substance Painter. I applied the smart material known as Wood Walnut to the entire model.

Stone Campfire – Old World – Rustic / Medieval Image, 2020

The style of my campfire is gonna be more based on the right reference image because that is the image that displays the campfire itself in the most detail. However I would like to take inspiration from aspects of the left image such as the cooking pot as this could add to the design of my model.

Final Campfire
Final Campfire Wireframe

To create the stones of the campfire, I used spheres that I edited using sculpting tools and the scale tool and then placed them in a circular shape. To create the logs for the campfire, I used cylinders which had half of the model deleted which required me to use the fill hole function to add a face to the empty place where the other half of the cylinder was. I then used sculpting tools again to deform the logs so that they would look somewhat realistic. The three wooden parts and the part holding the cooking pot are just simple cylinders that have been scaled. The actual cooking pot itself was also made using a cylinder which had the top half deleted. I scaled the pot to the shape that I wanted for the pot and using the extrude tool to thicken the pot. To create the handle I extrude from two edges on both sides of the pot and merged the vertices on the end of them with the respective ones on the other side of the handle. I then smoothed the pot so that would be less rigid and so it would actually look like a pot.

Final Campfire Textured

Substance Painter was used to texture this model. The Pebble material was applied to the rocks around the campfire and scaled so that it fully covered them. A Colour Layer was also applied to make the colour more like an actual rock colour with the texture. The logs and the wood sticks have a smart material called Wood Ship Hull Nordic applied to them. A smart material known as Fabric Burlap is applied to part that holds the cooking pot. The cooking pot is textured with the smart material: Steel Painted Rough Damaged.
